📚 William Dampier
Navigator and writer William Dampier visited Shark Bay in 1699 while commanding HMS Roebuck. His voyage produced observations of the coast and collections of plants, shells and animals; some botanical specimens survive in Oxford. Earlier writing about his travels had helped win him the naval commission, bringing a former buccaneer into official exploration. Although the Roebuck later foundered at Ascension Island, journals and specimens were saved. Shark Bay belongs to this documented voyage of observation and collecting along the Western Australian coast.
